ProtarasProtaras at the far eastern side of the island is a resort which has grown in the past 15 years from a tiny community into a major tourist centre. Fig tree Bay was much of the reason for the development of Protaras as it is one of the best beaches of the island with crystal clear turquoise waters as all of the eastern side of Cyprus. Protaras which is about 15Km away from Ayia Napa, another popular summer resort, is offered for family vacation as well as for younger holidaymakers. It is more quiet than Ayia Napa which tends to be loud 24 hours a day for the whole summer period. Protaras has luxurious hotels on the beach and self catering apartments, many restaurants of international cuisine, discos, pubs, karaoke bars, cafes, taverns, car hire offices (Car hire Cyprus is recommended) and travel agencies, banks, mini & super markets and all kinds of facilities. Very popular in these areas are the water-sports where they can be found to most of the beaches such as water skiing, canoeing, bungee-jumping, scuba diving or snorkeling and others. Pernera beach and kalamies beach are just as Fig tree beach extremely popular. Ayios Elias (St. Elias) is another busy area of Protaras with new residential areas and luxury villas for renting or summer houses of the locals that come to spend their holidays (usually in August) here in Protaras. it is to this location, where people may visit the small chapel of St. Elias on top of a rocky hill of the area. To the areas of Protaras people can relax on the beach enjoying the summer sun and the peaceful Mediterranean waters. Protaras is about 45-50 Km away from Larnaca's international airport of about 40 minutes drive. Paralimni which is the biggest community of those areas with a population of 15 000 people is very close to Protaras a 5 to 10 minutes drive. Protaras such as the rest of the villages to the East is part of the Red Villages community which is the main area of potatoes plantation in Cyprus. They are knows as Red Villages because of the red soil which is just right for the cultivation of potatoes. The majority of the people to these areas used to be farmers cultivating land owning the potatoes plantations, breeding animals etc. It was an agricultural area. Nowadays the majority has turned into the tourism industry and they are now the owners of the restaurants, taverns, apartment units and hotel owners. Potatoes though are still one of the main products of the area as well as the yum yum roots which are very similar to the sweet potatoes, melons and water melons.
