Ayia NapaAyia Napa, was once a quite remote place where most of the people were fishermen and farmers. Its name means Holy Mary of the woods due to a priceless icon of virgin Mary that was found back to the 16th century in what used to be the woods of this area. It was found by a Venetian princess who also decided to built a monastery dedicating it to the Holy Mary of the woods and place the icon inside the church of the monastery. The monastery exists until today and it attracts many visitors. These days Ayia Napa is one of the most popular summer destinations of the Mediterranean it's a busy tourist centre with discos, pubs, restaurants luxurious hotels and self catering apartments, car hire firms (Car hire Cyprus Organization is recommended), - although most of the people prefer to move around with hired motor bikes- banks and all kind of facilities of an upgraded tourist area. It is also connected by a regular bus service to Larnaca and Paralimni. A new road leads along the coast passing Makronisos Beach, Golden Beach and Nissi Beach all of these are extremely pleasant with fine white sand. In summer time they tend to get literally pact. The beaches are linked by a paved walkway. Plenty of water sports facilities are available to all of the beaches as well as self-service snack bars with loud music of famous DJs who are invited to Ayia Napa every summer. At its far eastern end, on the headland below the Grecian Bay hotel, are some of the most beautiful sights of this coast. These are spectacular white cliff formations with caves standing out impressively against the distinctive turquoise of the Mediterranean. They are visible from the path in the garden of the hotel or visitors can hire a canoe and explore them by sea. Either way they are definitely worth a detour.
